SaMD

Software as a Medical Device

Updated

SaMD is software that is itself a medical device: it has a medical purpose (diagnosis, treatment, monitoring) and runs on general hardware rather than being part of a device.

In the EU it falls under the MDR (Rule 11), in the US under FDA device rules; an app that only records what the user enters, without diagnosing, is generally not SaMD.
