DICOM

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine

Updated

DICOM is the standard for storing and transmitting medical images (CT, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound) together with their metadata, used by essentially every imaging device and archive.

A DICOM file carries pixel data plus tags such as patient name, study date and modality, and the same standard defines the network services archives use to exchange them.
