HIPAA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (US)
HIPAA is the US federal law whose Privacy and Security Rules govern how covered entities (providers, insurers, clearinghouses) and their business associates handle protected health information.
It applies by who holds the data, not by the data itself, so a consumer health app outside that circle is usually governed by FTC rules instead; GDPR applies by the data.
