Break-the-glass

Updated

Break-the-glass is an emergency access mechanism: a clinician who is not normally permitted to see a record can override the restriction by declaring an emergency, with the access logged and reviewed afterwards.

It balances consent with patient safety; FHIR expresses it with purpose-of-use codes (ETREAT, BTG) in security labels and AuditEvents.
