Healthcare APIs
How applications read and write medical data: healthcare and FHIR APIs, free FHIR servers and sandboxes, patient consent, remote monitoring, lab connectors and giving AI assistants controlled access to records.
A healthcare API is an interface through which applications read and write medical data, ideally as standard FHIR resources, with patient consent and an audit trail of every access. Choosing or building one means deciding on the data model, authentication (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SMART on FHIR), consent management, where the data is hosted, and how developers test with synthetic data instead of real patients.
| Data model | FHIR R4 resources, or a custom model mapped to FHIR |
|---|---|
| Access | OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SMART on FHIR scopes |
| Control | Patient consent and audit logs on every read and write |
| Testing | Sandbox with synthetic patients |
| Typical sources | EHRs, laboratories (HL7 v2, CSV), wearables, patient input |
What is a healthcare API, and how do you choose a backend?
- Healthcare data API: what to look for, and how to read and write a patient record in an hourA practical guide to choosing a healthcare data API: FHIR R4 or REST, patient consent, provenance, EU hosting, a free sandbox.
- FHIR platform as a backend: what a FHIR backend as a service gives you, and what it does notA FHIR platform is more than a FHIR server.
- Free FHIR server for development: a sandbox with 30 synthetic patients and six months of historyWhere to get a free FHIR R4 server you can write to today: the Anpheros sandbox, self-service, with 30 synthetic patients, realistic LOINC, ICD-10 and ATC data, a REST API, webhooks and SDKs.
- Medplum Alternatives: Managed FHIR Backends ComparedMedplum alternatives compared by what a small team building a patient or clinic app needs: a FHIR R4 API in minutes, patient consent built in, EU hosting, predictable cost, and whether you run servers yourself.
- AWS HealthLake & Google Healthcare API AlternativesAWS HealthLake, Google Cloud Healthcare API and Azure Health Data Services are managed FHIR stores for big-cloud teams.
How do consent, monitoring and lab data work through an API?
- Patient consent platform: how consent, scopes, expiry and revocation work in a health-data APIWhat a platform that helps with patient consent has to do: consent as a first-class object with scopes and expiry, revocation that takes effect immediately, an access log the patient can read, and AI writes held for approval.
- Remote Vital Signs Monitoring API with FHIRHow to build remote patient monitoring on a FHIR record without extra hardware: readings from the phone, the watch or a blood pressure monitor arrive as FHIR Observations under the patient's consent, your app gets a webhook, the clinic reads the series.
- Lab connector: how a laboratory report in HL7 v2, CSV or JSON becomes FHIR Observations in one requestHow to connect a laboratory to a patient record: one POST with the whole report (HL7 v2 ORU^R01, CSV or JSON), results mapped to LOINC with units, reference ranges and the laboratory as performer, unmapped markers reported back.
How do AI applications get access to medical data?
- Healthcare API for AI: a provenance-labelled patient context within a token budgetWhat an AI model needs from a healthcare API that a plain FHIR search does not give it: the right facts first, each labelled with who recorded it, inside a token budget, under consent.
- EMR integration with AI medical assistants: a FHIR record, a context API and an MCP serverHow to connect an AI medical assistant to a patient record safely: a provenance-labelled context within a token budget, reads under the patient's consent, writes held as proposals until the person approves.
- Medication data for AI agents: how to code medications with ATC and store them in FHIR so a model can use themHow developers should choose a medication database for an AI agent: what ATC codes give you, what a bundled terminology subset covers and what it does not (no interactions), how MedicationStatement and MedicationAdministration are structured, and how an agent reads and proposes medications through Anpheros Platform.
- RAG on medical records: how it works, with provenanceRetrieval-augmented generation lets a language model answer from a person's own record.
