Covered entity

HIPAA covered entity

Updated

A covered entity is an organisation directly subject to HIPAA: a health plan, a health care clearinghouse or a health care provider that conducts standard electronic transactions such as claims.

Vendors that handle protected health information for a covered entity are business associates instead, and must sign a business associate agreement.
