Identity proofing

Identity proofing and identity assurance level (IAL)

Updated

Identity proofing is the process of verifying that a person is who they claim to be, by checking evidence such as an identity document, before giving them a digital identity or access to records.

Its strength is expressed as an identity assurance level (IAL1, IAL2, as in NIST SP 800-63), and the HL7 identity matching guide uses proofed identities to improve patient matching across organisations.
