HIE

Health Information Exchange

Updated

Health information exchange is the electronic sharing of a patient's health information between doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, public health agencies and patients.

It is usually described as directed exchange (pushing a summary to a known recipient) or query-based exchange (looking a patient up across other sources), and in the US the term also names the regional and state organisations that run such networks, now linked nationally through TEFCA.
