NPI

National Provider Identifier

Updated

The NPI is the unique 10-digit number that identifies US healthcare providers, both individuals and organisations, under HIPAA Administrative Simplification, and it must be used on all HIPAA standard transactions.

It carries no information about the provider, is issued free of charge through NPPES, and appears in FHIR as an identifier on Practitioner and Organization resources.
